Hurry Up!! Wisconsin is calling for a golden opportunity for students that offers student research grants to graduate students.

Have you been invited to present your research at a conference or do you need additional funds to support research travel in preparation for your dissertation, final exhibition, or thesis? If so, you should consider applying for a Student Research Grants Competition (SRGC) Award. Award levels are $1,500 for Research Travel and $600 or $1,200 for Conference Presentation funds.

Eligibility

  • Students must be enrolled at UW–Madison as full-time graduate students. Priority will be given to dissertators and MFA students in their final year, and to those who have not previously received an SRGC Research Travel or Conference Presentation Award.
  • Students must be traveling to conduct research supporting a dissertation, thesis, or final exhibition.

How to Write the Justification for a Travel Grant

Benefits

  • The SRGC Research Travel Award supports travel expenses to research related to your thesis or final exhibition. Research travel awards cannot be used for travel that primarily involves attending a conference, workshop, or training experience that does not involve conducting the research needed for your dissertation, thesis, or final exhibition. Applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis throughout the year. Not all eligible applications will be funded.

Application Process

Complete the Research Travel Award application on the Wisconsin Scholarship Hub (WiSH) website, including:

  1. Information regarding research location, dates, and student status.
  2. A synopsis of your research plan.
  3. An estimated itemized budget that includes all funding sources. Applicants are expected to research rates and be good stewards of university resources when making purchasing decisions. Applications that appear to have inflated costs or been irresponsible with university funds will not be considered. Students should pursue funding from other sources before applying for a Research Travel Award and may be rejected if they do not have any other funding for their research travel.
  4. Your advisor’s contact information. Your advisor will be sent an email with a link where they will be asked to verify your research travel plans.

Two participation support schemes have been put in place by the EGU Council to facilitate the widest possible participation in EGU22: Roland Schlich travel support for in-person participants and a registration-fee waiver scheme for virtual participants.

Registration fee waivers for virtual participants

Registration fees are waived for virtual participation by:

  • Scientists with a permanent affiliation in a low- or lower-middle-income country according to the World Bank definition.
  • Undergraduate and Master’s students. Proof of student status is required.

See the registration page for further details.

Eligibility

A participant can receive a maximum of two ECSTS and two ESTS during their career. In other words, applicants who have received two Roland Schlich travel support in a category in the past are not eligible to apply for that category again.

  • Early Career Scientist’s Travel Support (ECSTS)

Roland Schlich Travel Support scheme is specifically for early-career scientists (ECS). The nominee needs to satisfy the EGU definition of an ECS by 1 January 2022: be a student, a Ph.D. candidate, or a practicing scientist who received their highest certificate (e.g., BSc, MSc, or Ph.D.) within the past seven years. The seven-year period can be extended to allow for periods when the scientist was not working in science because of, but not limited to, caring and/or parental responsibilities, disability, personal illness, community obligations, or national service.

Participants from low-income countries in Europe are particularly encouraged to apply for travel support as dedicated funds are earmarked for this group. These countries include the following: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey, and Ukraine.

Additionally, earmarked funds are also dedicated towards early-career scientists from low-, lower-middle, and upper-middle-income non-European countries as determined by the World Bank designation of Gross National Income per capita.

  • Established Scientist’s Travel Support (ESTS)

A very limited amount of the overall budget of the conference is reserved for assisting established scientists from low- and lower-middle-income countries as determined by the World Bank designation of Gross National Income per capita.

Benefits

  • Financial assistance towards travel expenditures may be provided at the discretion of the support selection committee to a maximum of €300.

It is a priority of the Society to support its member’s attendance at conferences, training courses or lab visits to learn new techniques, or at any other relevant events. The committee will look favorably on applications where other funding has been sought to fill any gap between the amount that is being requested and the funds required for the conference travel and attendance.

Due to the high number of applications received for each reviewing round, it should be noted that the conference that the applicant wishes to attend must be more than 1 month after the closing date of the round applied to. If the conference takes place less than 1 month after the closing date then the application will be ineligible and will not be reviewed by the committee.

Eligibility

  • Postgraduate
  • Early Career
  • Full, and Emeritus members
  • Applicants need to have been a member for at least 12 months prior to the deadline on the closing date of the round applied to. Members that have joined as multi-year members are eligible to apply for a General Travel Grant after six months of membership has elapsed.
  • Applicants must not have received one of the following Society grants in the 12 months before the closing date of the round applied to Student Bursary, Early Career Bursary, or Full Member Bursary.
  • Applicants need to provide an abstract that has been submitted to the conference, to demonstrate active participation. In the case of visits to other laboratories to learn new techniques, please provide a summary of the intended work to be undertaken during the visit.
  • Applicants must have been a member of the Biochemical Society for over 12 months on the closing date of the round that they apply to.
  • Applicants that do not fulfill this criterion will be ineligible and their applications will not be reviewed by the committee.

The MCZ awards travel grants for research in animal systematics, known as the Ernst Mayr Grants. The principal objective of these grants is to stimulate taxonomic work on neglected taxa. These include taxa with numerous poorly described species, genera and families known to have many undescribed species in institutional collections, taxa for which it is unknown what proportion of the nominal species are synonyms and difficult genera without keys. It is not the aim of these grants to support largely phylogenetic studies of taxa in which the species are reasonably well known or to support biogeographic studies. The study of type specimens and their correct identification is the greatest need in poorly known taxa. This typically requires visits to other museums, which is what the Ernst Mayr Grants program tries to facilitate. Preference is given to studies that use the MCZ’s collections, although applications to work at other museums will be considered. There is enough demand for this support for taxonomic work to make it impossible to also support phylogenetic and other evolutionary studies from the Ernst Mayr Grants.

Eligibility

  • This grant is open to all

Benefits

  • Typical expenses that may be paid from these grants include travel, lodging, and meals for up to a few weeks while conducting research at the museum(s), reasonable services purchased from the host institution and research supplies
  • Awards average about $1,000 each and may not exceed $1,500
  • Recipients will receive a check from the Bank of America, sent by FedEx. Alternatively, checks can be picked up at the Museum of Comparative Zoology

Application Process

  • An application must be written in English, and include:
    • a short project description and explicit statement of research goals
    • itinerary
    • budget
    • curriculum vitae
    • three letters of support
    • letter or email from each collection to be visited
  • Click here to apply: Ernst Mayr Travel Grant applications

Note: Brazilian researchers please note: The MCZ has established Material Transfer Agreements with multiple institutions in Brazil which allow to exchange loans. This may impact your proposal by making travel to the MCZ unnecessary. To find out if your institution is eligible to receive specimen loans from the MCZ, please contact Melissa Aja.

Through a generous founding gift from Edward O. Wilson, Faculty-Curator Emeritus and University Research Professor Emeritus, and with support from additional donors, the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ) at Harvard University has established the E.O. Wilson Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. This program supports postdoctoral researchers at MCZ to pursue the discovery and formal taxonomic description of Earth’s animal species. Fellows will work under the supervision of one or more MCZ faculty-curators, who will provide office space, access to lab facilities, and necessary research support. The program aims to achieve broad taxonomic coverage and is not restricted to any particular taxon. At this time, the selection of fellows will give priority to candidates who work on living species.

Eligibility

  • A Ph.D. with relevant research experience in taxonomy and/or systematics is required
  • All formal requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed before the start of the fellowship, though degree receipt may be forthcoming
  • The EOW fellowship program is open to both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens
  • Where appropriate, proposed research should utilize an integrative approach that combines several data types in crafting solutions to taxonomic problems
  • Applicants need to identify at least one faculty-curator who has agreed to supervise the fellowship

Benefits

  • Stipend of $55,000/year
  • Benefits-eligible
  • Research and travel allowance of $4,000/year
  • Start date flexible, but within 12 months of extended fellowship offer
  • Maximum two-year appointment, with funding for year 2 contingent upon successful performance during year 1
  • Residence in the Cambridge area is required
  • Relocation allowance negotiable after fellowship awarded

Application Process

  • Click here to apply: Harvard Academic Recruiting Information eSystem
  • Application Components
    • A cover letter no longer than one page
    • A research proposal, no longer than four pages and single-spaced, should describe
      • the nature and scope of the proposed research project
      • the approach and methods to be employed
      • how existing MCZ collections would be utilized and augmented with new specimens
      • laboratory and equipment requirements
      • the proposed MCZ faculty-curator sponsor, and
      • likely products (publications, etc.) to be completed by the end of the fellowship period
    • Research budget: Include a simple, one-page budget that itemizes anticipated research and travel costs, not to exceed the fellowship allowance
    • A curriculum vitae no longer than three pages
    • Up to five pertinent publications
    • Three letters of recommendation from non-Harvard scientists. Include names and contact information of the three referees with the application. The letters will be submitted separately from the application through an online system (see below) but are due by the application deadline. The application is complete only when all three letters are received
    • Interview: A subset of applicants may be asked to further discuss their proposals with the selection committee via videoconference
