It is a priority of the Society to support its member’s attendance at conferences, training courses or lab visits to learn new techniques, or at any other relevant events. The committee will look favorably on applications where other funding has been sought to fill any gap between the amount that is being requested and the funds required for the conference travel and attendance.

Due to the high number of applications received for each reviewing round, it should be noted that the conference that the applicant wishes to attend must be more than 1 month after the closing date of the round applied to. If the conference takes place less than 1 month after the closing date then the application will be ineligible and will not be reviewed by the committee.

Eligibility

  • Postgraduate
  • Early Career
  • Full, and Emeritus members
  • Applicants need to have been a member for at least 12 months prior to the deadline on the closing date of the round applied to. Members that have joined as multi-year members are eligible to apply for a General Travel Grant after six months of membership has elapsed.
  • Applicants must not have received one of the following Society grants in the 12 months before the closing date of the round applied to Student Bursary, Early Career Bursary, or Full Member Bursary.
  • Applicants need to provide an abstract that has been submitted to the conference, to demonstrate active participation. In the case of visits to other laboratories to learn new techniques, please provide a summary of the intended work to be undertaken during the visit.
  • Applicants must have been a member of the Biochemical Society for over 12 months on the closing date of the round that they apply to.
  • Applicants that do not fulfill this criterion will be ineligible and their applications will not be reviewed by the committee.

Benefits

  • The travel award offers between £300 and £500 to attend the conference

The MCZ awards travel grants for research in animal systematics, known as the Ernst Mayr Grants. The principal objective of these grants is to stimulate taxonomic work on neglected taxa. These include taxa with numerous poorly described species, genera and families known to have many undescribed species in institutional collections, taxa for which it is unknown what proportion of the nominal species are synonyms and difficult genera without keys. It is not the aim of these grants to support largely phylogenetic studies of taxa in which the species are reasonably well known or to support biogeographic studies. The study of type specimens and their correct identification is the greatest need in poorly known taxa. This typically requires visits to other museums, which is what the Ernst Mayr Grants program tries to facilitate. Preference is given to studies that use the MCZ’s collections, although applications to work at other museums will be considered. There is enough demand for this support for taxonomic work to make it impossible to also support phylogenetic and other evolutionary studies from the Ernst Mayr Grants.

Eligibility

  • This grant is open to all

Benefits

  • Typical expenses that may be paid from these grants include travel, lodging, and meals for up to a few weeks while conducting research at the museum(s), reasonable services purchased from the host institution and research supplies
  • Awards average about $1,000 each and may not exceed $1,500
  • Recipients will receive a check from the Bank of America, sent by FedEx. Alternatively, checks can be picked up at the Museum of Comparative Zoology

Application Process

  • An application must be written in English, and include:
    • a short project description and explicit statement of research goals
    • itinerary
    • budget
    • curriculum vitae
    • three letters of support
    • letter or email from each collection to be visited
  • Click here to apply: Ernst Mayr Travel Grant applications

Note: Brazilian researchers please note: The MCZ has established Material Transfer Agreements with multiple institutions in Brazil which allow to exchange loans. This may impact your proposal by making travel to the MCZ unnecessary. To find out if your institution is eligible to receive specimen loans from the MCZ, please contact Melissa Aja.

Wilson, Faculty-Curator Emeritus and University Research Professor Emeritus, and with support from additional donors, the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ) at Harvard University has established the E.O. Wilson Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. This program supports postdoctoral researchers at MCZ to pursue the discovery and formal taxonomic description of Earth’s animal species. Fellows will work under the supervision of one or more MCZ faculty-curators, who will provide office space, access to lab facilities, and necessary research support. The program aims to achieve broad taxonomic coverage and is not restricted to any particular taxon. At this time, the selection of fellows will give priority to candidates who work on living species.

Eligibility

  • All formal requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed before the start of the fellowship, though degree receipt may be forthcoming
  • The EOW fellowship program is open to both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens
  • Where appropriate, proposed research should utilize an integrative approach that combines several data types in crafting solutions to taxonomic problems
  • Applicants need to identify at least one faculty-curator who has agreed to supervise the fellowship

Benefits

  • Stipend of $55,000/year
  • Benefits-eligible
  • Research and travel allowance of $4,000/year
  • Start date flexible, but within 12 months of extended fellowship offer
  • Maximum two-year appointment, with funding for year 2 contingent upon successful performance during year 1
  • Residence in the Cambridge area is required
  • Relocation allowance negotiable after fellowship awarded

Application Process

  • Click here to apply: Harvard Academic Recruiting Information eSystem
  • Application Components
    • A cover letter no longer than one page
    • A research proposal, no longer than four pages and single-spaced, should describe
      • the nature and scope of the proposed research project
      • the approach and methods to be employed
      • how existing MCZ collections would be utilized and augmented with new specimens
      • laboratory and equipment requirements
      • the proposed MCZ faculty-curator sponsor, and
      • likely products (publications, etc.) to be completed by the end of the fellowship period
    • Research budget: Include a simple, one-page budget that itemizes anticipated research and travel costs, not to exceed the fellowship allowance
    • A curriculum vitae no longer than three pages
    • Up to five pertinent publications
    • Three letters of recommendation from non-Harvard scientists. Include names and contact information of the three referees with the application. The letters will be submitted separately from the application through an online system (see below) but are due by the application deadline.

Since 2018, the Max Weber Foundation – German Humanities Institutes Abroad (MWS) – awards travel grants once a year, with the support of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. The grants will be awarded to scientists (doctoral and post-doctoral) from sinology or related subjects, whose professional qualification phase is concerned with Chinese history, language or culture in the broadest sense and for whose research a stay in China is indispensable.

Every year, two travel grants will be awarded for a period of research of up to three months, for the purposes of fieldwork, archive, and/or library research in China, preferably in Peking.

Eligibility

  • Applications are accepted from highly qualified sinologists, as well as humanities and social science scholars (most recent degree at least masters, MA, Staatsexamen or bachelor’s degree) of any nationality, whose professional qualification phase is concerned with Chinese history, language or culture in the broadest sense and who can present a research plan for their stay in China. Adequate language skills that are necessary for conducting the research project are also required. An affiliation to a university or (research) institution in the German-speaking area should be given

Benefits

  • The persons chosen to receive the grants can get organizational/administrative and academic support in Peking, within the scope of the resources available. The MWS China office in Peking, which was set up in 2017, relies on cooperation with the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Together, EFEO and MWS make up the Europäisches Zentrum für China-Studien [European Centre for Chinese Studies] in Peking. They arrange contracts in Chinese, French and German humanities and social sciences, conduct basic research, and hold events
