Harold Powers Travel Fund

The Harold Powers Travel Fund honors the polymathic scholar and distinguished AMS member whose publications have ranged from music and language to medieval mode to Indian music to Puccini and whose interests were wider still, but always with the communicative aspects of music at their base.

Eligibility

  • The award is to be given annually to one or more doctoral students or Ph.D. graduates of North American universities to conduct doctoral or post-doctoral musicological research in all fields of musical scholarship and throughout the world.
  • If they seek to conduct research for their dissertation, they must have completed all other requirements for the Ph.D.
  • If they seek to conduct post-doctoral research, they should have completed the Ph.D. within the past five years. Preference will be given to applicants whose home institutions do not offer financial support for musicological research.

Application Process

The procedure consists of the following:

The application and all materials must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET, 1 April 2023.

  • A 150-word summary of your proposal that briefly describes:

a) the problem or question you are addressing in your research project

b) the significance of the project

c) what do you expect to accomplish during the funding period?

Additional space is then provided for you to discuss these three aspects of the proposal at greater length (500-, 250-, and 200-word limit, respectively).

  • Describe the overall project that the present proposal supports, explaining the basic ideas, problems, or questions to be explored. (500-word limit)
  • Explain the significance of the overall project the present proposal supports and the anticipated contribution of the project to the existing body of research and writing on the topic or question. (250-word limit)
  • Provide the expected results of research done during the grant period, and plans for further research on the project. If the publication or another form of acceptance of the results of the proposed research has already been arranged, please provide this information (200-word limit)
  • A more detailed plan of work (500 words) that describes:

a) preliminary work already completed

b) the present state of the proposed research

c) stages (if any) to be completed following the grant period.

  • Information regarding

a) Institution(s) you intend to visit

b) Itinerary

c) Budget

d) If working with foreign language materials, your level of fluency

  • Specific to the Cohen/RIPM Fund application only:

a) How does your proposal advance the goals of RIPM?

b) Which periodicals are essential to the realization of your project and why?

You are also asked to supply one letter of support to be submitted by a scholar familiar with your work. Please use the letter request tool within the application form to send a request to the scholar writing the letter. This will send them a form to complete to upload your letter. Even if you apply for more than one fund, you need only submit one letter.
