Application Process

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis but must be submitted at least 2 weeks PRIOR to the educational activity/conference/travel occurring for review and notice of approval. The Office of Community Engagement supports educational activities specifically focused on themes of social justice, health equity, social medicine and community engagement, therefore conferences, training activities, and poster/presentation submissions consistent with those areas of interest are more likely to be supported. For areas of interest outside of those specified, we encourage seeking other sources of funding support.

Important Notes

  • The award of a travel/educational support grant does not constitute approval of the proposed trip.
  • Before funding is released, awardees will need to comply with MUSC travel policies. If overseas travel is involved awardees will need to provide documentation of approval from the International Travel Oversight Committee (ITOC).
  • Request review and approval by initiating the process in the Student and Resident Travel Registry.

Award Information

  • Proposals must be for a future educational activity/conference/travel. Funding for retroactive activity and travel is not considered.
  • Preference is given to students applying for the first time, and those NOT receiving additional funds for coverage from another COM grant.
  • In fairness to other applicants, awards are limited to one per student per fiscal year.
  • The amount of awards is determined by the amount of funding available at the time the selection process occurs and based on the volume of strong applications.
  • Educational activities can be seminars, conferences, or formal training. Students are strongly encouraged to contact the Office of Community Engagement with questions about whether or not an activity qualifies if they are uncertain.
  • Applications received after the deadline (2 weeks prior to the event/training) will not be accepted.
  • Proposals are reviewed by the COM Associate Dean for Community Engagement and the Community Engagement Advisory Board.

Students must complete and submit the application form to the Office of Community Engagement. Forms should be completed online, printed then scanned as a pdf and sent to ramsetty@musc.edu.

Evaluation

Requests will be evaluated based on how closely the training/educational opportunity reflects the focus areas of the office of Community Engagement and the degree of involvement by the student applicant (presenting versus attending, active training versus observation etc).
