Hurry up!! don’t miss the chance to win a four-night to Split in Croatia.

Central Dalmatia is a place where cultural and natural wonders collide. Pebbly beaches are lapped by clear waters and plates bulge with seafood. Roman, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture jostle for space telling tales of Croatia’s storied past. Now, thanks to Croatia Airlines, the Cornaro Hotel, the Croatian National Tourist Board, the Split Tourist Board, and the Split-Dalmatia County Tourist Board, one reader will be jetting off on a four-night holiday to Split…

Time travel

Soak up Croatia’s history on a stroll through Split. Start at Diocletian’s Palace, where you can marvel at this Roman-built masterpiece. The palace is still the living, breathing heart of the city, and its narrow walkways are abuzz with cafés, restaurants, and atmospheric Roman ruins. Further west lies the UNESCO-listed city of Trogir. Walk its historical core to explore the Cathedral of St Lawrence, the 15th-century Cipiko Palace, and the Kamerlengo Castle, which offers fine views of the old town and the coast. For local culture, listen to traditional folk songs and watch the UNESCO-listed “silent circle dance” in the hinterlands.

Local flavor

Dalmatia’s natural larder is bursting with tasty treats. Sample a glass or two of locally produced wine, and be sure to order a platter of Dalmatian pršut (dry-cured, thinly sliced ham). This delicacy is typically served with bread and cheese and it makes for an authentic local lunch. All along the Dalmatian coast, you can tuck into oysters, grilled white fish, and langoustines, which are plentiful. Be sure to accompany your meal with bread dipped in olive oil: Dalmatia is home to over 4.5 million olive trees.

Set sail

Croatia’s island-studded coast offers ample opportunity for exploring. A historic and popular escape is Hvar, home to some impressive Venetian architecture. For a more rugged island experience, drop anchor at Vis to explore its Venetian past and hike and bike in the mountains. Alternatively, head for Brač to relax on the famous Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) beach and take in the view from Vidova Gora, the highest peak on all of Croatia’s islands.

Primed for adventure

Central Dalmatia’s natural landscapes are as diverse as the adventures you’ll find there. Head into the Mosor, Dinara, and Biokovo mountains to hike, climb, and bike. Adrenalin junkies will find thrills aplenty riding the whitewater rapids of Cetina canyon or exploring the coastal caves of Vis by kayak. Meanwhile,

diving around the islands of Šolta and Brač reveals a wondrous subterranean world of caves, marine life, and sunken warships. After all, that adventure, head back to the five-star Cornaro Hotel in Split for a well-deserved, luxurious night’s sleep.

Eligibility

  • It is only valid for the citizen of the UK (The prize is valid for UK departures and must be redeemed by 14 October 2022, in line with Croatia Airlines’ flying schedule).

Do you need money for travel? Follow These 5 Steps to Win a Travel Grant

Benefits

  • The prize entitles the winner to Flights London Gatwick – Split – London Gatwick sponsored by Croatia Airlines and 4 nights in Cornaro Hotel (5*) in Split sponsored by Cornaro Hotel, CNTB and Split-Dalmatia County Tourist Board, Split Tourist Board.

The MCZ awards travel grants for research in animal systematics, known as the Ernst Mayr Grants. The principal objective of these grants is to stimulate taxonomic work on neglected taxa. These include taxa with numerous poorly described species, genera and families known to have many undescribed species in institutional collections, taxa for which it is unknown what proportion of the nominal species are synonyms and difficult genera without keys. It is not the aim of these grants to support largely phylogenetic studies of taxa in which the species are reasonably well known or to support biogeographic studies. The study of type specimens and their correct identification is the greatest need in poorly known taxa. This typically requires visits to other museums, which is what the Ernst Mayr Grants program tries to facilitate. Preference is given to studies that use the MCZ’s collections, although applications to work at other museums will be considered. There is enough demand for this support for taxonomic work to make it impossible to also support phylogenetic and other evolutionary studies from the Ernst Mayr Grants.

Eligibility

  • This grant is open to all

Benefits

  • Typical expenses that may be paid from these grants include travel, lodging, and meals for up to a few weeks while conducting research at the museum(s), reasonable services purchased from the host institution and research supplies
  • Awards average about $1,000 each and may not exceed $1,500
  • Recipients will receive a check from the Bank of America, sent by FedEx. Alternatively, checks can be picked up at the Museum of Comparative Zoology

Application Process

  • An application must be written in English, and include:
    • a short project description and explicit statement of research goals
    • itinerary
    • budget
    • curriculum vitae
    • three letters of support
    • letter or email from each collection to be visited
  • Click here to apply: Ernst Mayr Travel Grant applications

Note: Brazilian researchers please note: The MCZ has established Material Transfer Agreements with multiple institutions in Brazil which allow to exchange loans. This may impact your proposal by making travel to the MCZ unnecessary. To find out if your institution is eligible to receive specimen loans from the MCZ, please contact Melissa Aja.
