Global Scholar in Training Awards - Travel Support

Global Scholar-in-Training Awards is hosted by the AACR to grant the opportunity to the eligible yearly-career investigators in countries designated by the World Bank as low-, lower-middle, or upper-middle-income economies(LMIC), who wish to participate in the AACR Annual Meeting.

The awards are beneficial for the participants to enhance their education, training, and professional network of scientists who are engaged in basic, clinical, translational, or epidemiological cancer research. The Global Scholar-in-Training Awards are to be used to offset a portion of the travel and subsistence expenses incurred to attend the AACR Annual Meeting.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of a country designated by the World Bank as a low-, lower-middle, or upper-middle-income economy (LMIC). A listing of these countries can be found at The World Bank website. Candidates must reside in the country to be eligible for the award. Researchers who are citizens or permanent residents of an LMIC, but currently employed or pursuing training in a country outside of an LMIC are not eligible.
  • Applicants must be the first author and presenter of an abstract submitted for presentation at the AACR Annual Meeting.
  • Applicants must be a full-time graduate student currently engaged in doctoral research, resident, clinical or postdoctoral fellow, or early-career investigator (within 10 years of doctoral-level degree conferral at the time of this application).
  • Applicants must be proficient in English (writing and speaking).
  • Applicants cannot be an employee or subcontractor of the for-profit private industry.
  • Applicants are not required to be members of the AACR to apply for this award.
  • Applicants may apply for other travel awards, but may not receive more than one award from the AACR to attend the Annual Meeting.

Benefits

  • The travel award up to $ 2,000 toward the cost of meals and travel.

Conditions and Logistics.

Following the conclusion of the Annual Meeting, award recipients also will have the opportunity to participate in a special networking event and tour state-of-the-art laboratory facilities at a leading academic institution.

  • Award monies will be bank-wired to award recipients upon receipt of their reimbursement forms and receipts after the Annual Meeting.
  • Award recipients will make their own travel arrangements.
  • Hotel accommodations at a pre-selected hotel will be reserved for recipients and paid for by AACR.
  • Awardees are required to participate in an informal interview with AACR staff at the Annual Meeting, and to provide structured feedback about the program via an online survey after they return to their home countries.
  • If an awardee is unable to attend the Annual Meeting, the award must be forfeited. An awardee who cancels their participation in the Annual Meeting is financially responsible for any costs incurred.

Application

Applicants will be asked to submit:
  • The title, body and control number of the abstract submitted to the AACR Annual Meeting via the online abstract submission process;
  • A CV (including a list of publications); and
  • a personal statement that describes their background, field of study, current research, work setting, and long-term career aspirations; how they would benefit from attending the Annual Meeting; and in what ways they would share the knowledge gained with their home country.
